Near the ancient church of San Marcellino XX century buildings located vineyards of Rocca di Montegrossi c two indigenous grape varieties – Sangiovese and Punitello. They have over the years given their harvest to create special wines, and since 2010 have been used for the production of wine “San Marcellino” Gran Selezione, which rightfully immediately fell into the category of wines of the highest class. Its production starts in cement tanks where fermentation takes place at a temperature of 26 C for several weeks. These young wines two varieties are mixed and aged 24 months in barriques and large oak barrels of Allier French oak (46% – in the new, 49% – three-year, 5% – a four-year). After bottling wine aging process continues in bottles for at least 24 months.
Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi holding a hundred acres of Rocca di Montegrosso, is a descendant of the famous Tuscan wine dynasty Ricasoli. Having Rocca di Montegrosso located 7 km away from Gaiole in the historical grape of Chianti area, it belongs to a family from the XI century. Ancestor Marco – Baron Bettino Ricasoli, who lived in the XIX century and engaged in large-scale production of wine, as a minister, managed at the legislative level to lay the foundations for the creation of the famous “Chianti”. On the farm was located the fortress la Rocca and vineyards, divided into a hilly area at an altitude of between 340 and 510 meters above sea level. Today, the 20 hectares of land set aside under vines, grown as traditional Tuscan Sangiovese varieties (13 ha), Merlot (2.5 hectares) and Punitello and international varieties: Canaiolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malvasia Bianca del Chianti. “The Pearl” is a vineyard estates San Marcellino, was named from the ancient Romanesque church, located nearby.
