Tuscany is rightly famous for its red wines, so the Marquis Niccol Antinori chose Umbria and bought the Castello della Sala, with its 29 farms and 483 acres of fields and woods. Antinori ennobled ground, smashing them on the olive groves and vineyards, and restored the castle built in 1350. Castello della Sala stands on a rocky promontory at 534 meters above sea level. This beautiful medieval fortress surrounded by the old hills, which once housed the Etruscan city. Castello della Sala now covers an area of 500 hectares, of which 160 are planted with vines.
Pinot Nero from the Castello della Sala was first produced in 1988. Pinot Nero is a 7 hectares of vineyards. He landed on calcareous soils interspersed with yellow sand sedimentary Pliocene age. Microclimate of the area is ideal for growing Pinot Noir.
