To create red dry wine “Castello Fonterutoli” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG, the producer uses about 36 Sangiovese biotypes from 120 different vineyards and a small part of Malvasia Nera and Colorino growing on limestone soils. Age of vines ranges from 12 to 30 years. Vintage 2013 began to collect vintage September 25. Fermentation lasting 15-18 days, held at a temperature of 26-28 C. The wine is aged in small French oak barrels for 20 months. Bottling took place in June 2016. Wine storage potential is over 20 years. At the peak of its maturity, vintage 2013 will be in 2017-2030.
“Fonterutoli”, Gran Selezione, Chianti Classico DOCG, 2013 was awarded the platinum medal at the “Decanter World Wine Awards”.
The owners of Fonterutoli are the marquises of Mazzei, who also own the farms of Zisola in Sicily and Tenuta Belguardo in Tuscany. They played an important role in the Tuscan history of winemaking: thanks to Mazzei in 1398, the name of the wine “Chianti” appeared. Today, the Mazzei family owns 470 hectares of vineyards, 69 hectares of which are occupied by the vineyards of the Fonterutoli farm located in 4 separate zones: Belvedere, Fonterutoli, Badola and Siepi. One of the factors determining the high concentration and complex aroma of Fonterutoli wines is to maintain low yields: no more than 40 hectoliters of grapes are produced per hectare. Characteristic features of berries growing in different areas also influence the formation of the taste of wine. Berries collected from low sites in Siepi and Belvedere form a powerful structure, and clones from the higher sites Fonterutoli and Badiola give the wine wealth and elegance. Special attention is paid to the harvest: grapes at different sites are harvested only by hand at different times when the berries reach optimum maturity. The process of making wines takes place under the control of legendary agronomist-enologist Carlo Ferrini (Carlo Ferrini), who was awarded the title Winemaker of the Year by Gambero Rosso in 2000.
